Brief

Runabout

800m. Sydney bronze medallist Kelly Holmes says she is aiming to take part in the 1,500m race in Athens, despite planning to compete in the 800m in the Norwich Union Olympic Games trials in Manchester on July 10 and 11. Holmes, who took silver at 800m in last year’s World Championships, crushed the opposition in the metric mile at the IAAF Super Grand Prix meeting in Gateshead last weekend. She now only needs to finish in the top two below two minutes in Manchester to gain automatic qualification for the GB squad.

Meanwhile, main gold medal hope Paula Radcliffe has announced that she will not run in both the marathon and the 10,000m, although she still has not decided which distance to go for.

Final comeback

Troubled former champion Mike Tyson will lace up his gloves one more time on July 30 to take on British heavyweight Danny Williams. Linked recently with the equivalent of US pro-wrestling in Japan, K-1 boxing, Tyson has not been in action since February 2003, when he scored a first-round knockout over unheralded Frenchman Clifford Etienne.

In the pits

Williams pilot Ralf Schumacher is out for the remainder of the Formula One season after suffering two broken vertebrae in his 200mph crash in Indianapolis. Spanish test driver Marc Gene will take over his car for at least the next two races in France and England. Jacques Villeneuve is a hot candidate to rejoin Williams thereafter.
