Portugal’s Environment Ministry has ordered the closure of 41 illegal breakers yards following the launch of Operação Resíduos in December.
Since 2007, when 300 illegal breakers yards were identified in Portugal, the government has been clamping down on owners who are not complying with environment laws, with hazardous materials such as motor oil and batteries not being disposed of properly.
Environment Minister Dulce Pássaro said the yards that have been ordered to close have to do so within the deadline imposed and all vehicles removed from the sites.
