New Portuguese tennis number one Rui Machado overcame two ‘old enemies’ in Olivier Patience and Julio Silva to reach the quarter-finals of the Sao Paulo Challenger before being bested by Marcos Daniel.
The Faro-born 26-year-old, who also partnered Spaniard Daniel Munoz-De La Nava to the narrowest of 6-3, 6-7, 8-10 doubles final defeats at the hands of number one seeds Franco Ferreiro and André Sá at the same tournament, rose to an unprecedented number 91 ranking in the world earlier this week.
