Boy, 6, missing after mother “holding him in her arms” jumps from bridge

A six-year-old child is missing after his mother reportedly held him in her arms and jumped off a bridge into a river in the north of Portugal this afternoon (June 17). The father is said to be in a state of shock and has been taken to hospital.

The incident happened on the Santa Eugénia bridge which crosses over the Cávado River, in Barcelos, and was apparently witnessed by a firefighter, according to Correio da Manhã.

Jornal de Notícias reports that the woman was rescued by a man with a small fishing boat. She was “unconscious” and taken to Braga Hospital.

The boy is still missing.

Firefighters have searched the river banks and presently have three divers searching the river.

The search is expected to continue while there is still daylight.
