Bowls club back on track

After the devastating blow of finding the playing surface vandalised at the Vila da Luz bowls club (VDLB) on January 12 and four of the eight rinks destroyed, the club were able to continue with its planned competitions within the Bowls Portugal Association league, Super 10s and Australian Pairs games.

The club achieved a second place ranking in both the League and Super 10s, while the Australian Pairs is currently ongoing.

Due to the travelling costs to away games and the addition of A22 tolls plus rising fuel costs, the management committee at VDLB decided to offset costs by slashing membership fees by 45% for both new and renewing members.

New and old members can now register for a year with VDLB for €200.

Stephen Lee, Chair man of VDLB, told the Algarve Resident: “The club is already looking forward to next season, when hopefully the events of January 12 will just be a memory.” (read January 20 edition of the Algarve Resident)

The club also expects all new carpets to be laid out by next season, designed to withstand the summer heat and offer a ‘non-fade’ capability.

“We plan a number of internal competitions and external Bowls Portugal fixtures with enough to satisfy any ardent bowler. VDLB still offers free bowling instruction and loan equipment as part of their efforts to spread the word of bowls.”
