Bowls Algarve Summer League 2009

The final round of matches took place at Parque da Floresta on Thursday, June 25, in somewhat overcast and humid conditions.

However, the high standard of bowling was unaffected and there were some very close and competitive matches played.

Albufeira Cats have recovered somewhat from a bad start to the league and finished with a good victory over Pedras by 40-30 and 8 points to 2. Pedras, however, did finish third in their first venture into league bowls and can be well satisfied with their overall performance.

Alvor Larks also finished on a high note, beating Amendoeira by 38-30 and 6 points to 4. PDF Pirates had a convincing win over Valverde by 41-28 and 6 points to 4 and as a result climbed to finish fourth overall after a poor start which saw them bottom at one point.

Finally, Alvor Doves claimed the four points they needed to ensure winning the Championship, despite losing to the Eagles by 35-27 and 6 points to 4. Eagles and Doves were probably the most consistent teams in the league, ending up first and second, each with a 5-2 win lose record. Doves winning out on points 47 against 40.

So, the final table has Doves as the worthy winners on 47 points, Eagles second on 40 and Pedras third with 38 points.

Pirates finished on 35, Larks were on 34 equal with Valverde but ahead on shot difference. Amendoeira ended with 31 points and Cats had 21.

Thanks to Janice and her staff at PDF, everyone enjoyed a lovely meal and refreshments after the matches and then Connie Borrell and Alan Clarke presented the trophy to the winning Doves captain, Paul Johnson.

This Summers’ league competition shows further evidence of the growth and positive development of the structure and standard of bowling in the Algarve and we now look forward to an exciting new programme of leagues and competitions in October and throughout the winter.
