By Alan Clarke, League Director
Another new and exciting league season kicked off on Saturday, October 10, with a full programme of matches and a new look to the league.
There are now 12 teams competing for the championship as four new teams have been admitted this season.
We therefore wish every success and happy bowling to Valverde Vikings and Valverde Vulcans, Amendoeira Nuts and Pedras Panthers. The Wanderers have also changed their name to the Alvor Amigos.
ABC Cats have had a new carpet laid at their green and they gave this a winning baptism with a 65 – 51 victory over the Amigos, taking all 8 points now on offer (two for each winning triple and two bonus points for the overall aggregate win).
Alvor Greens, meanwhile, travelled to Valverde Vikings to play the first league match on that new green. An enjoyable and competitive game finally saw the Greens triumph by 53-34 and by eight points to nil. PDF Crusaders started their campaign at home against the Alvor Harlequins and won by 56-43 and six points to two.
Pedras Panthers had a very tense introduction to their league campaign against the Tavira Tigers, who just sneaked home by 49-48 and snapping up six points to two.
PDF Sinners were also at home against the newcomers Amendoeira Nuts, running out comfortable winners by 62-34 and eight points to nil.
In the final confrontation this weekend, Valverde Vulcans produced probably the performance of the day, playing away against a strong Alvor Gladiators team. The visitors had a convincing victory by 60-43, taking six points to two. Sinners therefore top the early table on eight points, closely followed by the Greens and the Cats also on maximum points.
It is also very encouraging to note that The Inter-Club championships have attracted a record entry this season. We have introduced a new mixed pairs competition which has proved very popular with 35 entries and making six possible championships to go for on finals day at Parque Da Floresta in March 2010.
A full and varied programme of bowls is therefore on offer to keep all members of all clubs more than occupied and involved in 2009 and 2010.
