Bowls Algarve final week of the Winter League

A busy week this week. Monday, March 13 Balaia Bowls Club welcomed Simmo’s Touring Team based in Ipswich. The team captain of the day for Simmo’s Tour was a 12-year-old who played extremely well. The morning was cooler than recently but sunny and the day was enjoyed by all, followed by drinks on the terrace after the match.

Tuesday, March 14 dawned cloudy and windy for the finals of the Inter-Club competition hosted by Tavira when spectators were treated to a feast of bowling. The morning held the ladies singles with Maggie Dance beating Catherine Webb both of Alvor; the men’s singles with Bob Parkinson of Albufeira Cats beating Norman Merritt of Floresta; and men’s pairs with Gerry Parr and David Berbridge of Albufeira Cats beating Peter Harris and Philip King of Pedras.

Over the lunch break, the weather improved a little, although still cold, and spectators enjoyed the mixed pairs with Zé Martins and Catherine Webb of Alvor beating Susan Kinane and Gerry Kinane of Floresta; and the triples with Sheila and Geoff Pratt and Sheila Currall of Alvor winning against Jean and Peter King, and Jan Wilson of Balaia.

Wednesday, March 15 was still cloudy and a more blustery morning. The competition continued with the ladies pairs: Lynn King and Jan Wilson of Balaia beat Rene Berbridge and Evelyn Oliver of Albufeira Cats; the mixed fours with Alex Martins, Catherine Webb, Paul Johnson and Sheila Currall beating Greer Hogg, David Hibbert, Alison Roberts and Nick Roberts of Floresta; and the open fours with Jeff Wright, John Kerr, Gerry Kinane and Norman Merritt of Floresta beating Gabriel Noonan, Alan Reynolds, Tom Lilley and Gerry Parr of Albufeira Cats.

Thanks go to Tavira for a well-prepared green and excellent hospitality, and to John Dance for arranging the whole Inter-Club competition (never an easy task).

On Saturday, March 18, Balaia Bowls Club played their final Bowls Algarve League matches. The Whalers played at home winning two rinks against the Pods who won one. This final game maintains the Whalers in sixth position in the League and the Pods in 14th position.

Balaia welcomes bowlers of all levels, new or experienced, and has its roll up on Tuesdays and Fridays at 9.45am for 10am start.
