The Summer League has this week had a week off whilst fourteen members travelled to Spain for the return matches between Bowls Algarve and La Posada Bowls Club of Spain.
It was very hot and dry for the games, Friday’s being the hardest as it was overcast and very humid.
The Spanish team visited the Algarve back at the beginning of May, and lost most of their games, as they usually play on carpet and our games were principally on grass.
The Bowls Algarve’s team visit to Spain was Posada’s chance to obtain revenge as we lost most of our games on their home carpet. On this occasion the trophy will remain in Spain, but we will try to win it back for Portugal next year!
To finish the visit, on Friday evening Posada Bowls club arranged and provided a Barbeque and Disco. The music had everyone’s feet tapping and lots of singing and dancing, a really good evening and a lovely way to round off an excellent visit.
The Bowls Algarve team also took their chance to travel to visit the team who play at Saydo Hotel bowling green. A very enjoyable mornings bowling was had by all, followed by drinks in the hotel away from the heat and a chance to find out more about life in Spain.
Each day after the mornings bowling and drinks to recover followed by lunch, most members took the chance to relax or explore locally, meeting up again in the evening for dinner. This gave everyone the chance to analyse the game from that morning and to discuss team selection for the next day. Wednesday was a day off and various members went down to the coast at Marbella or travelled to Córdoba, either which way the temperatures soared, and everyone came together again in the cooler evening for night caps.
In keeping with their fundraising activities, Balaia Bowls Club are again having a big push to raise more funds for the Albufeira Voluntary Bombeiros. After the success of the Parachute Jumps last year which raised over €5,000 and the recent donation of over €11,000 euros, the next event is a sponsored 24-hour bowling marathon on September 16-17. Anyone wishing to make a donation or pledge please contact Richard King (Club Chairman) on mobile (00351) 935 367 492 or email [email protected].
Balaia welcomes bowlers of all levels, whether new or experienced and has its’ Roll Up on Tuesdays and Fridays at 09.45am for 10.00am start. For more information see website: www.albufeirabowls.com
