A PROGRAMME to collect used plastic bottle tops in the Algarve is coming to an end as a major partner in the initiative has pulled out.
The project, which began in January 2006 and was run by Amal, Algar and Associação Tampa Amiga, will stop on January 19.
The programme raised money to buy orthopaedic materials for residents in the Algarve, including wheelchairs and specialised mattresses.
Algar, the company that recycles the region’s waste, will no longer be backing the initiative as it is now involved with charity work to raise money for breast screening equipment in the Algarve.
Both Amal, the Algarve Câmaras association, and Associação Tampa Amiga, are currently looking to private businesses for help in continuing the collections and recycling.
