English version can be read for free online
If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about the geological history of the Algarve, then now is the time.
Several specialists came together last year to release a book on this topic which has now been released in English and for free online. Entitled ‘A History with Many Millions of Years – From The Tethys Ocean to the Barrocal of the Algarve’, the book tells the geological history of the Algarve basin, particularly the ‘Planalto do Escarpão’ (Escarpão Plateau).
The English version of the book has been released in celebration of International Geodiversity Day, which is celebrated around the world as a way of “promoting the various aspects of geodiversity and territorial sustainability”.
The book was released as part of the Algarvensis Geopark, which aspires to become part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks network, and Albufeira Council. It was written and illustrated by Delminda Moura and Sónia Oliveira, researchers from the Marine and Environmental Research Centre at the University of Algarve.
Other collaborators included Luís Pereira, who is coordinating the Algarvensis Geopark bid on behalf of Albufeira Council, as well as Cristina Veiga-Pires, Scientific Coordinator of the Algarvensis Geopark bid and Professor at the University of Algarve, who was in charge of the scientific revision of the book.
Professor Nuno Pimentel, Scientific Coordinator of the Geoparque Oeste bid and Professor at the University of Lisbon, wrote the book’s preface and highlighted: “This is an unusual work, as it seeks to tell the long geological history of a specific place following an approach that is both scientific and intended for dissemination. Scientific rigour is always present, in every detail about the organisms, paleoenvironments, ages or structures. But we can also feel a broader view, which seeks to talk about the geological “rules of the game”, its processes and the resulting materials.”
