AUTHOR DR John Piper will be signing copies of his novel, Mother Killers, at the Hotel Garbe in Armação de Pêra on February 21.
As reported in The Resident’s First Edition feature on February 2, Mother Killers tells the story of childbed fever, an 1845 killer that stalked the maternity hospitals of Europe and North America, killing mothers and babies.
The novel shows how Semmelweis, a Hungarian obstetrician, overcame the jealousies, bigotry and ignorance prevalent in the medical profession at the time to find the cause and cure for the horrendous illness.
John Piper MB, BS, FRCS read Medicine at the University of London. Working as a consultant surgeon in English hospitals until 1977, he was disillusioned by what he saw happening to the NHS and took the post of visiting professor of surgery at the University of Shiraz in Iran.
He now lives in Portugal with his wife, Odete. Since 1997, Dr Piper has a clinic at the Hotel Garbe once a week for clients resident in the hotel.
Dr Piper will be at the hotel from 11.30am until 1pm.
