CONDITIONS WERE perfect for the start of the inaugural Portimão Global Ocean Race on Sunday and there were emotional scenes at Portimão marina as families and friends waved the sailors off on their 30,000 mile adventure around the world.
Deputy Mayor of Portimão, Luis Carito, fired the start gun at 2pm and immediately Boris Herrmann and Felix Oehme in their Beluga Racer took an early lead.
The first gate in the race was one mile south of Cape St Vincent and as the racers passed by the landmark, dolphins joined the sailors (pictured) in what was described as a “good omen for the race” by event organiser Brian Hancock.
The next stop for the racers will be Cape Town.
