Residents in the Albufeira council are to be charged an additional 80 cents a month in their water bill to help the local voluntary firefighters.
The civil protection tax was approved by Albufeira Câmara following a petition from 1,200 residents.
Businesses will pay an additional €1.5 a month.
A similar tax is already in place in Vila Real de Santo António, where consumers pay €1 extra in their water bill to support the council’s voluntary firefighters association.
