An anonymous telephone call claiming that a bomb had been planted in one of the restaurants in the praça (plaza) next to the beach was answered by staff in the reception of the Vale do Lobo resort, on August 30 at 7.30pm. The threat was taken seriously by staff at the Algarve’s premier luxury resort, and the entire praça was evacuated. The bomb squad from Faro GNR attended and, after a thorough search of the area, declared it clear of explosives. Alda Filipe, head of public relations for the resort, was reported as saying that “it was a joke in bad taste”. An hour-and-a-half after the bomb scare was received, the praça reopened.
