Body of octogenarian found in Arade River in Portimão

The body of an 87-year-old man was found floating in the Arade River near Portimão’s Ponte Velha (old bridge) on Thursday morning at around 7.45am.

The man, who lived in the nearby town of Alvor, was dressed and his body did not show any signs of violence, Portimão port captain Rodrigo Gonzalez dos Paços told Correio da Manhã tabloid.

CM adds that the man had not been reported missing. It is believed he had gone for a walk near the river and possibly slipped and fell into the water.

But as it was still quite early – and most people are staying home due to the coronavirus outbreak – it is unlikely anyone heard his potential cries for help.

Firefighters and an INEM emergency team were called and his death was declared at the scene.

Maritime and PJ police are investigating the case while the body is due to undergo an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
