The body of an 88-year-old man from Quarteira who had been missing for three weeks was found yesterday (November 13) in the waters of Ribeira do Vascão in Mértola, Alentejo.
Manuel Brás, a former hunter, had not been seen since October 23 when he left home to meet up with other hunting friends in Mértola.
Authorities were alerted the next day when he never arrived.
His Mitsubishi van was found “stuck in mud and locked” on October 27, around three kilometers away from the small village of São Pedro de Solis in Mértola. The man’s wallet, with €500 inside, was inside, said national tabloid Correio da Manhã.
Though extensive searches were carried out in the area, they were called off on October 29.
It was only yesterday that locals found his body in Ribeira do Vascão, not far from where Brás’ van had been found.
The body did not show any signs of violence but was due to undergo an autopsy at Beja Hospital, according to Jornal de Notícias.
Authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
