Authorities have confirmed that the body of a 72-year-old Dutch sailor who had been missing since November 21 in the Eastern Algarve has been found.
The body was reportedly spotted in the Guadiana River by a fisherman on Tuesday at around 9am.
Authorities had been searching for the man – who lived on his boat which he frequently docked near Alcoutim and Sanlúcar de Guadiana –for 26 days after he was believed to have fallen into the river.
José María Pérez, Mayor of Sanlúcar del Guadiana, told Europa Press that it is believed that the rain that fell these last few days played a role in the body finally being found.
He also revealed that a ceremony to honour his memory was held around two weeks ago in Alcoutim which was attended by friends, local residents and his daughter.
