Body of German tourist still missing

THE BODY of German tourist Olaf Vopel, who is believed to have drowned in the waters off Beliche Fortress, near Sagres, on February 23, has still not been found by the Maritime police.

His family and friends organised a remembrance ceremony on Friday, (March 14) at the cemetery of Evessen, in Germany, where his family live.

Olaf Vopel went missing after being swept into the water by high waves while admiring the views below the Beliche fortress. He was with a group of six other friends, who were in the Algarve to participate in a parachuting competition in Portimão (See The Resident, February 29).

In the same incident, Ramona Schroeder, a 30-year-old pupil of the German sky diving school where Olaf Vopel was an instructor, also died.

The body of Mrs Schroeder, who was the mother of a toddler, was recovered by the Portuguese Maritime police minutes after falling in the water. She was cremated on March 8 in a family-only ceremony.
