Body of German sailor found in Portimão

A GERMAN man was found dead in the Ria de Alvor in Portimão after falling from his boat and apparently drowning in the river on December 30.

The man, whose name has not yet been confirmed, lived aboard his boat, the Sinbad, in Portimão harbour and was found hanging from the side of his boat by a local fisherman who contacted the authorities.

A spokesman from the German consulate in Faro told The Resident: “We cannot yet confirm the victim’s name because the embassy has not yet been informed of the death by the Portuguese authorities.”

It is believed that the man drowned after losing his balance aboard the boat and falling backwards into the water, trapping his leg on the boat.

Although the Polícia Judiciária was called to the scene, no foul play is suspected and the accidental cause of death is expected to be confirmed after the autopsy results are released by the Instituto de Medicina Legal in Portimão.

“He was a pleasant man who came ashore to buy supplies and have a few drinks,” said a local resident. “He could speak a little Portuguese.”
