The desperate search for 16-year-old Hugo Oliveira ended in the worst possible way with the discovery of a body early this morning floating in the Douro river, near Vila Nova da Gaia.
PJ police are now investigating what may have happened after Hugo left the Maia shopping centre on February 7 (click here).
A number of reports at the time pointed to the boy having been sighted on the day he went missing on a bridge in Porto, almost 10 kms from Maia.
According to the fisherman who discovered Hugo’s body near the quayside in Afurada – around 7 kms south of Porto – this morning, the body “looked as if it had been in the water for two weeks”.
It is a tragic end to a story that so far appears to have made very little sense.
