Body found in Moita well was murdered; identity still a mystery

PJ police search through missing persons files

A murder hunt is underway following the discovery of a body at the bottom of a well in Moita – tied by hands and feet with insulation tape reinforced with wire, and partially wrapped in a blanket.

The added difficulty in this case is the absence of an identity for the victim: a man thought to have been aged between 60-70 years old.

His body was found by local people in Penteada, Moita, last Thursday after one of them went to the well for water, explain reports.

Ít is unclear how long the body will have been down the well. It was in a state of decomposition, but not badly enough to be unable to discern whether it was a man or a woman.

There are no doubts however that this was a violent crime, says Correio da Manhã today.

Police have gone through missing persons reports, and so far the victim does not match any local disappearances (in the Lisbon/ Margem Sul areas). This doesn’t mean that a missing persons report may be filed in future for someone who lived in those areas.

For now, theories are that the man (and the crime) may have occurred in another part of the country.
