Blue shark bites fisherman 167 kms offshore; Air Force medical rescue scrambled

A fisherman, described as Indonesian and aged 35, is recovering in hospital today after being bitten by a blue shark while he was 167 kms west of Vila do Conde. The bite (circumstances unexplained, but possibly the shark was hauled onto the fishing boat in the nets) caused profuse bleeding, and an SOS call, answered by a Naval medical rescue helicopter. The call was received early yesterday evening, and the man was transported to Porto airport before midnight. He is now described as in a stable condition in intensive care in hospital. Reports stress that blue sharks are not known for attacking people. In this case, the animal will have been in stress. The fisherman was bitten on the leg.
