City councils in the region applied for 71 beaches, 17 more than last year.
Vila do Bispo council has applied for 11 beaches. Silves council, which has not applied in the past, is now a candidate with its two beaches, Praia de Armação de Pêra and Praia Grande.
Albufeira applied for 18 beaches, Loulé seven, Lagos six, Portimão five, Vila Real de Santo António, Lago, Tavira and Faro one each, Olhão three and Aljezur three
