The Resident Group, publishers of the Algarve Resident, is again inviting members of the community to give blood at its annual blood drive, this year in Lagoa, on Wednesday, April 20.
The initiative, now in its third year, is run in conjunction with non-profit blood donor association in the western Algarve, ADSBA, and this year has been taken further west to Intermarché supermarket on the Carvoeiro-Lagoa road.
A purpose-built mobile blood unit from the national blood institute (IPS) in Lisbon will be stationed at the supermarket’s car park, open to the public from 10.30am until 2pm and from 3.30pm until 6pm.
A spokesman from Intermarché said: “We are very pleased to welcome this initiative to our premises for the first time and hope to see many of our customers participating in the blood drive.”
A spokesman from ADSBA added: “Having held the blood drives in the Almancil area in the past two years, it is fantastic to give the people living in the Lagoa council the opportunity to donate closer to home.
“Our staff and doctors speak English and will be on hand to make the whole process of giving blood as easy as possible.”
Giving blood takes no more than 30 minutes from the time a person enters the unit and involves filling in a health questionnaire before speaking to a doctor, who will assess a person’s general health, and then giving blood.
To give blood, potential donors must be between the ages of 18 and 65, or 60 years old if giving blood for the first time, as well as weighing a minimum of 50kg and not suffer from chronic illnesses.
