An appeal launched on Friday, February 12 by the country’s blood institute for healthy citizens to donate blood has already produced positive results.
Following an appeal by the Instituto Português do Sangue (IPS), which announced last week that national stocks were running low, dozens of people attended donor sessions and visited hospitals across the country during the weekend to donate blood.
A spokesman for IPS said the recent nurses’ strike (Algarve Resident, February 5) and the bad weather have meant blood donations were significantly down, therefore creating a temporary shortage of blood units in hospitals.
To donate blood, please contact your local hospital.
