Blind ambition

A 20 year old blind pianist from Japan has tied for the prestigious gold medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.

Nobuyuki Tsujii won the contest jointly with 19 year old Haochen Zhang from China, making the pair the first Asian winners to receive the prize which was presented at a ceremony held in Fort Worth, Texas.

Born blind, Nobuyuki Tsujii has been playing the piano since the age of two explaining that he first listens to a piece of music then memorises it to be able to perform the piece himself.

The young pianist said: “I want to give my greatest gratitude to the American audiences who have such a warm heart and gave me long lasting standing ovations.”
