Birthing mothers face new hospital closures

The crisis hitting obstetrics in Portugal lurches on through the summer with news that eight hospital maternity units are closed today with limited services going on right through the weekend. Health secretary António Lacerda Sales has done his best to say “no one will be left without an alternative” (should they find their local maternity unit shut), stressing that INEM (medical emergency service) will take people where they need to go, with “speed and security”. This assurance comes as INEM’s failings in response to emergencies have hit new heights.
