MONCHIQUE AND Caldeirão hills are now included in the national map of Zonas de Protecção Especial (ZPE), special areas for protected species.
The government’s decision, announced on February 7, will benefit the Bonelli’s Eagle (Hieraaetus fasciatus), which is one of the threatened bird species living in those areas. The move aims to reinforce the already existing Sítios de Importância Comunitária, places of natural importance, under the Natura 2000 network, and the national and European Union legislation constraining human occupation in sensitive areas.
