Members of the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) have elected the Black Stork (Ciconia nigra) as Bird of the Year 2010.
The rare migratory species, which is sensitive to human disturbance, has been chosen as the symbol for a campaign linked to the International Year of Biodiversity 2010, being developed by SPEA.
According to the SPEA website, birdwatchers in the Algarve have a chance of admiring the Black Stork in the Sagres area from the end of February to September, when it then migrates to Africa for the winter.
