The Algarve Senior Bikers (ASB) held their Christmas charity lunch at O Barril restaurant in Albufeira on December 8. There to welcome the 44 members was Santa, alias David Shirley, founder of the ASB group.
The lunch was organised by David and Dee Shirley together with Alain and Catherine Balouzet. André and the staff at O Barril provided “an excellent lunch”, which was followed by homemade cakes made by Dee and coffee.
The lunch, as well as being a social affair for the ASB members, was also an opportunity to raise money for the charity the bikers support, which is ‘A Gaivota’, a home for teenagers and children at risk in Albufeira. The lunch was attended by the director of the home, Dr Raquel Nunes, who was accompanied by Ana Sofia.
There was a draw for a Christmas hamper door prize, which was won by Andrew Chilton. And the two main raffle prizes for two-night stays in Paris hotels, sponsored by the Accor Hotel Group, were won by Huw Chivers and Simon Jennings.
At the end of the proceedings, ASB organiser David Shirley presented Dr Raquel Nunes with €1,950 for the benefit of the home.
In addition to this Christmas donation, the ASB has this year provided a birthday present for each of the children at A Gaivota and treated them all to a trip to a theme park in Spain plus supplying Easter eggs.
ASB member Martin Holway has been running his quiz nights at two venues in Carvoeiro again this year. Due to the high numbers of tourists who visited Carvoeiro this year and their outstanding generosity, Martin raised €670 from the Lighthouse Bar and Grill and a staggering €3,072 from the Thursday quiz nights at the Cocktail Garden.
