Portugal registered a 9% increase in accidents involving bicycles in 2014, according to a recent report released by the national road safety authority (ANSR). Last year, authorities registered a total of 1,914 accidents with bicycles (leading to 19 deaths) – 152 more than in 2013 (1,762 accidents, 20 deaths). Cyclists have had more rights on the road ever since new road rules came into effect last year, giving them right-of-way in some situations and allowing them to travel in pairs.
