Portimão is the scene of diverse top class sporting action over the coming week. At the city’s Arena the nation’s top handball teams are gathered to dispute the 5th Portuguese League Cup Final. The matches involving Benfica, Belenenses, Sporting, Porto, Braga and Madeira began their group phase today (Thursday) and reach their conclusion with the final on Sunday afternoon.
Teams not in action at any particular time will be visiting various schools and hospitals in the borough as well as involving themselves in fund raising activities which will benefit much needed medical equipment.
Also on Sunday, a little further west at the Algarve Motor Park, will be four days of Formula One testing featuring Renault, Toyota, Red Bull, Williams and McLaren, who are expecting to parade their current world champion Lewis Hamilton in the Algarve.
The action then switches to two wheels between January 23 and 25 with the last collective Superbike testing prior to the new season putting all the season’s pole starters through their paces. The circuit will then travel the world over the next nine months before returning to Portimão for its climax in October.
