Portugal was considered by Indian travel magazine Today’s Traveller to be the best destination in the world for art and culture, according to a press release from Turismo de Portugal.
The country won an award in the category of Outstanding International Showcase for Art & Culture.
The Portuguese tourism board stressed that, besides art and culture, the distinction also “promotes Portugal’s gastronomy, history as well as a desirable venue for weddings” and increases its visibility among tour operators.
The award was a result of the efforts throughout the past months in India to increase awareness regarding Portugal, according to the tourist board.
After conducting its first business mission, in which hundreds of Indian professional figures got to know the national tourist scenario, the country was put on the map due to the filming of a movie, which included many well-known Bollywood actors, in the Algarve and in Lisbon.
The award is to be handed over in a ceremony which will take place on August 30 in New Delhi at the 7th Today’s Traveller Awards. Oscar Fernandes, Indian Transport Minister, and Ramesh Sippy, one of the most important movie producers in India, will present the tourism board with the prize.
