Berbigão Festival returns to Figueira with tasty cockle dishes

The popular mollusc will be celebrated on September 9 and 10 with traditional recipes from time immemorable.

The Berbigão Festival is back at Polidesportivo da Figueira, in the parish of Mexilhoeira Grande. Scheduled for the weekend of September 9 and 10, between 19h00 and 01h00, the 19th edition of the festival will feature plenty of tasty gastronomic options and popular music.

The event focuses on typical dishes of the Algarve cuisine, such as cockle pasta, cockle rice, cockle polenta, cockle patties or cockles “au naturel”, all made on-site, complemented with regional sweets and pastries, as well as other food and drinks.

Figueira has been organising this festival for almost two decades to celebrate a mollusc that has deep roots among the local population, as its harvest in the Ria de Alvor since time immemorial and sale sustained many local families.

As for musical entertainment, on September 9, in addition to a performance by Marcelo Rio, Buba Espinho will present his repertoire of Alentejo singing and fado. On Sunday, 10, Cláudio Rosário and Porto-based band Giletes d’Aço will provide entertainment, combining music and humour in a unique style.
