Yesterday’s wildfire, north of Bensafrim, was brought under control finally after many hours of firefighting. It appears to have started with a foreign resident (believed to be German) clearing land and using machinery which caused a spark. As there has been no rule in place governing the use of machinery in rural settings this weekend, it seems unlikely the man will face charges. The blaze tore through pine trees and other vegetation, at one point jumping the main road between Bensafrim and Aljezur. It is still not clear how many hectares were affected. Today over 120 firefighters from corporations all over the Algarve are involved in dampening down operations. The incident has been officially classified as ‘in resolution’.
