The final of the Taça da Liga (League Cup), at the Algarve Stadium, between SC Braga and Moreirense attracted a paltry crowd of just under 7,000 fans after the game had been billed as a sell-out! No doubt the fact that Benfica failed to make the final after a shock 3-1 defeat by lowly Moreirense in the semi-final, three days prior, resulted in many disgruntled Eagles fans throwing away their tickets for the final.
Moreirense defeated SC Braga 1-0 in the final to record their first ever piece of major silverware; a remarkable achievement by the club from the small northern village of Moreira de Cónegos with a population of less than 5,000.
On Monday night, league leaders Benfica suffered another defeat when they lost 1-0 at V.Setúbal in the Primeira Liga.
FC Porto are just a point behind the Eagles who at the end of November were seven points clear of their northern rivals.
