After losing tragically in the stoppage time of last year’s Europa League final against Chelsea, Benfica were yet again defeated tonight (May 14) in the final of the competition – this year by Spanish side Sevilla in a dramatic penalty shootout.
Both teams were unable to score in the 120 minute-long match – extra-time included – leaving the scoreboard at 0-0.
In the deciding penalty shootout, Sevilla proved to be the calmest and most concentrated team, scoring all four of its penalties.
For the Eagles, strikers Óscar Cardozo and Rodrigo were unable to fool Sevilla’s Portuguese goalkeeper Beto, who defended both their shots and was rightly crowned the hero of the match.
Now, the Portuguese champions will have to clear their heads and focus on the final of the Portuguese Cup, scheduled for Sunday (May 18) at 5.15pm.
