After an emotional week that had seen thousands pay a fond farewell to Portuguese footballing superstar Eusébio, the Estádio do Luz in Lisbon was packed to the rafters with over 62,000 fans as The Eagles battled with FC Porto for top spot in the league.
Benfica players had Eusébio’s name proudly displayed on the reverse of their shirts and they did not let down the great man’s memory by taking all three points with goals from Rodrigo, after 13 minutes, and Garay in the second-half.
Matic, who was the star for Benfica, may well have been playing his last game for the Lisbon club before re-joining Chelsea and José Mourinho. Chris Wright
