A Belgian couple had to be rescued this week after becoming stranded on Praia da Barradinha in Rogil, Aljezur.
The couple, in their 30s, were out for a walk when they were “surprised” by the rising tide which engulfed their only way out of the beach.
They had their mobile phones with them but as they “did not know the numbers of Portuguese authorities”, they called friends in Belgium who then phoned the authorities on their behalf.
Firefighters and maritime police were dispatched at around 8pm on Monday (September 25) but only reached the couple around three hours later.
Lagos port captain Conceição Duarte explained that it was hard to spot the couple as it was dark by the time authorities arrived, and the couple had taken refuge in one of the cliffs.
Both holidaymakers were “cold and hungry” but were unharmed.
Portugal’s national emergency number is 112, the same as nearly all member states of the European Union as well as several other countries in Europe and the world.
