June 1 marked the official start of the bathing season in Portugal, despite grey skies and winter-like weather.
Although some municipalities started the beach season at the beginning of May, the majority will be opening for the summer this month.
Last Friday, 62 beach concessions across Portugal began providing lifeguards and support equipment for bathers. In the Algarve, beaches in Aljezur, Castro Marim, Lagoa, Loulé, Olhão, Portimão, Silves, Tavira, Vila do Bispo and Vila Real de Santo António were ready to welcome bathers.
Other beach concessions start business from June 15 and must be open by July 2.
