Beach drownings

Fifteen people drowned on Portugal’s beaches since the beginning of the summer season on June 1, according to the maritime authorities.

Five people died at supervised beaches and 10 at non-supervised beaches and fluvial beaches.

The maritime authorities say the majority of the deaths resulted from drowning or sudden death.

From June 1 to August 31, 348 rescue operations were carried out at supervised beaches and 154 drowning awareness campaigns were held throughout the country.
