A TOTAL of 13 people died on beaches in Portugal during the summer, five less than last year, according to the institute of emergency maritime rescue (ISN).
Between June 1 and September 30, three deaths were recorded on beaches with lifeguards and 10 occurred on unsupervised beaches.
According to an ISN spokesperson, the reduction in the deaths could be attributed to several awareness campaigns which have been launched about beach safety.
