Beach deaths 'drop'

Portugal’s Navy has announced that four people died at Portuguese beaches this year between May 1 and August 31.
It’s a sad figure, but one that has improved compared to the same period last year, in which 11 people lost their lives. Three out of this year’s four deaths happened in unsupervised beaches.
Two were cases of drowning – one involving a 59-year-old woman at Praia do Cabeço, Vila Real de Santo António on August 16, and the other a 28-year-old man at Praia do Rouxinol, Costa da Caparica (Almada) on June 14. The other was the sudden death of a 41-year-old man at Praia da Concha, Nazaré, on August 22.
A sudden death also claimed the life of an 86-year-old man at Praia de São Martinho, also in Nazaré, last Sunday (August 31) – the only death registered at a supervised beach.
According to the Navy, no deaths were registered this year on riverside beaches.
