Beach bar owner fatally shot in Aljezur

Police have arrested a man suspected of fatally shooting a 43-year-old beach bar owner in Aljezur on Sunday morning.

The two men were neighbours and had been involved in heated altercations over the years, frequently “insulting and assaulting each other”, reports national tabloid Correio da Manhã, adding that court cases against one another had been started.

The dispute came to a tragic end when the alleged attacker shot Jorge Cabrita in the chest at the Amado Bar, which he ran with his twin brother at Aljezur’s Amado beach.

CM reports that the alleged attacker, who was wearing a hoodie to conceal his face, also fired two shots at an employee and a relative of Cabrita’s but missed. Emergency services tried to resuscitate the victim, but his injuries were too severe and his death was confirmed at the scene.

The alleged shooter was able to escape in his car and drove to his home in Carrapateira where GNR police located him shortly after. He was placed under police custody and is due to be heard at Portimão court, facing one charge of murder and two of attempted murder.
