THE DESERT may not be the most obvious place to plan a spot of ice skating, but this week, the Lake Las Vegas Resort, an extravagant complex comprising a 320-acre man-made lake and several lush green golf courses, is opening an ice rink.
Set in the rugged desert landscape of the southern Nevada, only 17 miles from the dazzling lights of Las Vegas Strip, the rink measures 40ft by 70ft and can accommodate up to 60 skaters at a time. The attraction requires more than 500 gallons of water and a 12,000-pound freezer to keep things coolly ticking over.
Actually, the Lake Las Vegas resort is no stranger to excess – the development’s name suggests the presence of a lake on site, so the builders were called in and duly spent 10 years constructing one in the midst of the desert, then surrounding it with hotels, spas, golf courses and residential communities.
