The looming ‘época balnear’ – the moment Portugal’s beaches open for the summer season – is one of the principal short-term challenges for incoming director-general of the Maritime Authority vice-admiral António Coelho Cândido whose position also means he is the ‘commander-general’ of the Maritime Police. At his swearing in ceremony in Lisbon yesterday (March 8), the vice.admiral said this year’s beach season would be organised “on the basis of lessons learnt last year” when the pandemic already conditioned public access to and activities on Portugal’s beaches.
