THE NBA’s American basketball season is approaching its climax, with only a handful of regular games remaining. The Eastern Conference has been dominated by the Detroit Pistons, who have accumulated 63 victories while suffering only 16 defeats, a record vastly superior to almost all of the other 29 teams. Only the San Antonio Spurs, with 60 successes, can boast a similar record. Also through to the play-offs are New Jersey, Cleveland, Miami, Denver, Dallas, Memphis, Phoenix and the LA Clippers. During the current playing period, Kobe Bryant (LA Lakers) has broken Elgin Bayler’s 43-year-old scoring record, amassing 2,754 points by last weekend. Bayler (LA Clippers) had posted a best mark of 2,719 during the 1962-63 season.
