Barrier breach

The natural accumulation of water led to the natural sand barrier of the Salgados lagoon, near Armação de Pêra, breaching and draining water out for several hours on May 1.

João Ministro, a spokesman from the regional non-profit environmental organisation, Almargem, said that the situation led to high environmental costs as many birds’ nests, of species that will not reproduce again this year, were affected.

The breached sand barrier was closed up on the same day.
