Bank holidays

Ask Afpop
In this new monthly column, afpop, Portugal’s largest foreign residents’ association, aims to answer some of the most frequently-asked questions by members.

Question: I’ve been told that all towns in Portugal have a holiday. Is it still true and is there a list of what the days are for each town?

afpop answers: Actually yes, it is still true that most, if not all, towns in the country have a day of celebration. These days not necessarily all shops and services close, although all government and banking offices do.

Some stores will stay open, but most will give their staff the day off. Interestingly, the day may be a week day or weekend. They are automatically a holiday from work.
